Hi Mirdza,
I understand where you’re coming from—it can feel tough sometimes to find those key people who are ready to jump in. But here’s the thing I’ve learned over the years: 80% of people, no matter how much they talk about wanting change or how unhappy they are with their jobs, won’t actually take action. It’s just how human nature works in many areas of life, not just business.
Think about it—whether it’s in restaurants, fitness programs, or any industry, 80% of the results come from 20% of the people. And it’s the same in building a business. But here’s where the shift happens: you’re not looking for the 80%. You’re focusing on that special 20%—the ones who are warm, reliable, easy to talk to, with credibility, influence, and drive. Those are the people who can help you build a business where you can truly own your life.
You mentioned that since 2007, people have been waiting for you to “make it big.” I can tell you right now—those are not the people you’re looking for, at least most of them. Winners don’t think that way. You’re not going to make a living in this business by betting on 1,000 one-shots out at the track. And let’s be real, those people who are waiting for you to “make it” probably won’t ever get started, even if you do succeed. Most people like that don’t want you to make it because it justifies their own inaction. You can’t please them. And, truth be told, 95% of them are still broke or just getting by.
Listen to this carefully: If you get fat, people think you eat too much. If you lose weight, people think you’re sick. If you dress well, you’re showing off. If you dress simple, you’re poor. If you speak your mind, you’re rude. If you don’t, you’re a coward. If you’re successful, you’re arrogant. If you’re struggling, you’re lazy. If you’re honest, you’re naive.
No matter what you do in life, people will always criticize you without fail. So do what makes you happy, build your dream life, and focus on what matters—one day at a time. Forget those who are waiting for you to make it big. You can’t win with people who have that mindset.
Look at my first company in the 90s. My sponsor never even sent me a sample of the product until I begged him for a month. He eventually quit, but that didn’t stop me. I saw the potential of the product, read about network marketing and leverage, and I just went out there and built the business without him. My sponsor quit, Don’s sponsor quit, and Jordan Adler’s sponsor quit. But we didn’t stop because the concept was solid, and we believed in it.
Here’s something important to keep in mind—every chance you get, when you’re dealing with people you know and have a relationship with, ask them the $10,000 question: “If you were going to bet $10,000 on any one person that you know would be great at this, who would that be?” And then listen. If you can, get an introduction. But even if you can’t get an introduction, try to find that person yourself, build a relationship, and stay in touch appropriately. One of those people can make all the difference in the world, and they run with people just like them. Winners attract winners.
Now, back to what I was saying earlier: Don Failla didn’t initially meet Gabby Steiner directly. While in Germany, Don ran into a man named Tom on the street who recognized him because Don was wearing his Own Your Life hat and pin. They got to talking, and it turned out that Tom was with Herbalife and was thinking about leaving. Don was leaving town but invited Tom to a seminar the following month. When Tom returned, he brought Gabby Steiner with him. Gabby had already read Don’s book and was also ready to leave Herbalife. She joined Life Plus and built one of the largest teams in the business. Do you think if Don had quit, Gabby would have quit? Not a chance. Even after Don passed away, Gabby didn’t stop building because she was the right person. Don never did a three-way call with her, didn’t speak German for the first 25 years he was in Life Plus, and there were no translation tools like we have today. But because Gabby had the right characteristics, she went out and built it on her own. That’s what happens when you ask the right questions and sponsor people with the right mindset.
What we’re really looking for, though, is track record, track record, track record. You want to see what people have done in the past. If they were a great stay-at-home mom, the best engineer, or even the best janitor, it’s easy for them to transfer those skills to building a referral marketing business, especially with the Own Your Life system. The qualities that made them great at what they did before are the same qualities that can make them successful here. So, again, you do all these things and stack the deck in your favor, like I said before, and there’s no way you won’t find success. But you’ve got to do it every day until you have your four or five serious people who are coachable and treating it like a business.
Jordan Adler’s story is another great example. He was in 11 companies and never even got one customer. He didn’t make a dime for years! He finally found success in his 12th company after learning consistency. He didn’t apply Don’s book in the beginning, but the ideas from it kept him in the business. Fast forward to today, and he’s made close to $30 million! But it didn’t happen overnight. You can watch him talk about it on GETDONSAPP.COM—he’s given multiple testimonials there. If Jordan had waited for success before truly diving in, he’d still be broke today. So don’t worry if you’re not making money yet—it’s not about where you start, it’s about staying consistent.
Here’s the thing—you’re probably going to need to sponsor 20, 30, or 40 people to find those four or five people who are coachable, treat it like a business, and are in it for the long haul. But it’s a heck of a lot better than going through hundreds of them and seeing those “network marketing funerals” along the way. Stack the deck by wearing your Own Your Lifehat or pin—things like that make it easier to strike up conversations.
For example, years ago in the 90s, I was wearing my Own Your Life pin while standing in line at a convenience store waiting to pay for coffee. A guy behind me noticed it and asked, “Hey, Own Your Life—what’s that?” I replied, “Time, money, and health at a time in your life when you can enjoy it with those you love.” He said, “That’s interesting. How does that work?” Long story short, I ended up loaning him the book. Back in those days, you had to give out a physical book. I thought I might lose it, but I made him promise to give it back. About three weeks to a month later, I got back with him, and he ended up signing up. That one guy paid for my house and all my cars! If I hadn’t worn that pin, or hadn’t been ready to say that little phrase about time, money, and health, it wouldn’t have happened. So you’ve got to be prepared for moments like that. Preparation is everything. And it’s easy to be a pro in this business—you only have to learn a few key things.
Another great question to ask as you’re going through life, when appropriate, is, “What do you do for a living?” Sometimes they’ll ask you back, and sometimes they won’t. If they ask you back, just say, “Well, you know how most people want more time, money, and health?” They’ll usually nod their head or say yes. Then you just say, “We show people how to get that. If you’re interested, I can send you some information.”
And hey, by the way, you know this stuff I send you like this? Keep this stuff and pass it on to your team as you grow. That’s what creates duplication. Remember the Gabby Steiner story? One good one like that can pay for your house and cars. It just takes one good one. And by passing this information on, it doesn’t just mean you passing it—it could be another team member who passes it on, and then another. It could be passed on 20 levels down or even 50 levels down. Remember, our compensation plan has compression, so if you have one superstar down there and the people between you and that superstar aren’t doing anything, they compress right up to you. They could compress to your 10th level, 5th level, or even your 1st level. So these little tidbits I share with you can pay off for you in a huge way—not just helping you sponsor people (though it will help with that, too), but all these seeds that get planted… you never know which one’s going to sprout. You just have to stay consistent.
