Two Factors for Prospecting Success

In the last newsletter, we talked about Habit #2 and the common question:

“But what do I say to prospects when I meet them?”

Knowing what to say is important—but there’s more. There are two key factors for prospecting success: who we talk to and what we say. Let’s break them down.


Factor #1: Who Are We Talking To?

Some people argue that even average words work if we’re talking to a targeted group of prospects who desperately want what we offer.

That’s true—but here’s the reality: few of us have ever found this perfect group. For most of our careers, these pre-sold prospects seem to be hiding in a lost world. Haven’t found them yet? That’s normal.


Factor #2: What We Say

People are people. The words we use make a huge difference. Even ordinary people can become hot prospects if we use great ice breakers and engaging conversation.

If we can’t find the elusive group of pre-sold prospects, then Factor #2 becomes critical: better words will attract more prospects.

Ask yourself:

  1. What are the first words I say when meeting a new prospect?
  2. Do I have a sentence that clearly describes my offering?
  3. What words do I use to disable the prospect’s salesman alarm?
  4. What words do I use to talk to the decision-making part of the brain?

Yes, words are that important.

We can’t always rely on perfect prospect groups. Better words give us the chance to earn while searching.
